DILI, 01 July 2025 (TATOLI) – The Vice-President of Malaysia’s Senate, Datuk Nur Jazlan bin Tan Sri Mohamed, met with President José Ramos-Horta on Tuesday and reaffirmed Malaysia’s firm support for Timor-Leste’s full membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
During the meeting, Datuk Nur Jazlan conveyed that Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has made an “additional effort” to promote Timor-Leste’s integration within the regional organization.
He also emphasized that this support is based on deep cultural and historical ties that unite the two countries.
Horta, in turn, described Timor-Leste and Malaysia as part of the same rumpun (cultural lineage), an expression that represents one family of nations, highlighting that this cultural and regional affinity offers a solid foundation for a strategic partnership and for the joint progress of the region.
During the productive exchange of ideas, the Head of State expressed great confidence in Timor-Leste’s future role within ASEAN. This confidence was shared by Malaysia’s Senate Vice-President, who stated he believes that Timor-Leste will be a “good partner in ASEAN,” fully prepared to contribute to the objectives and common prosperity of the regional community.
