DILI, 18 July 2025 (TATOLI) – The country-wide ASEAN Awareness Campaign, supported by the European Union, is gaining momentum as Timor-Leste prepares to join the ASEAN family as a full member.

The awareness campaign, supported by the European Union and implemented by International Trade Centre, aims to enhance public understanding of what ASEAN is and what ASEAN membership means for Timor-Leste. The campaign is led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in partnership with other national institutions. As part of this effort and following the launch event and an outreach session in Dili, two additional sessions were held in Los Palos and Baucau on 24 and 26 June, respectively.

During these full-day interactive sessions, more than 300 participants—including municipal leaders, Chefes de Suco, and resident of those Municipalities—took part in presentations and open discussions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation team. Informational materials in Tetum, English, and Portuguese were distributed, explaining what ASEAN is and highlighting its potential implications for civil society and the private sector. These efforts aim to promote inclusive dialogue and ensure that all citizens understand the opportunities and responsibilities that come with ASEAN membership.

The national campaign, titled “Dalan ba ASEAN”, will continue touring all municipalities throughout Timor-Leste until the end of the year. It aims to raise awareness of the significance and benefits of ASEAN membership ahead of the country’s anticipated accession at the ASEAN Summit in October. In addition to in-person outreach, the campaign will feature television advertisements and a wide distribution of communication materials to increase public understanding and encourage active participation from all segments of society.

ASEAN is one of the fastest-growing regions in the world. With a combined GDP exceeding USD 3.6 trillion and a population of over 680 million, ASEAN membership presents a unique opportunity for Timor-Leste to tap into a dynamic regional market. It is expected to attract foreign investment, facilitate the integration of Timorese businesses into global value chains, and generate new economic and employment opportunities.

Beyond the economic dimension, ASEAN membership will enable Timor-Leste to contribute to regional peace and stability while safeguarding its sovereignty. The country also stands to benefit from joint regional programmes in education, health, and social development, as well as enhanced opportunities for cultural exchange.
