DILI, 24 July 2025 (TATOLI) – Portugal claimed gold medals in both the men’s and women’s beach volleyball finals at the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) Games, defeating Cape Verde and Timor-Leste respectively.
In the men’s final held at the Lecidere beach volleyball court, the Portuguese duo Tito Oliveira and Luís Filipe beat Cape Verde’s Denzel Ramos and Micael Barbosa in straight sets (2-0). Portugal took control early, dominating the first set 21-4 with fast plays, solid defense, and precise attacks.
Cape Verde started strong in the second set, scoring the first five points, but Portugal responded quickly and tactically. With cohesive play, the Portuguese side regained control and closed the match with a 21-11 victory, securing the gold medal.
In the women’s final, Portugal once again impressed with a 2-0 win over Timor-Leste in a spirited match that drew strong support from the home crowd, including the presence of Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão.
The first set was tightly contested, reaching a 16-16 tie, but a series of reception and service errors by Timor-Leste allowed Portugal to pull ahead and win the set 21-18. In the second set, Timor-Leste started with determination, but Portugal’s consistency prevailed, finishing the match with a commanding 21-13.
Portuguese coach Nuno São Tiago said the outcome matched the team’s expectations: “We are very satisfied with the result because we were confident we would win and bring home the gold medal.”
Player Tito Oliveira also expressed pride in representing Portugal and achieving the victory.
Portuguese athlete Inês Silva shared her joy after the win: “We are grateful to bring the gold medal back home. It’s a moment of pride for us and for our nation,” she said.
