DILI, 29 July 2025 (TATOL) – President Jose Ramos-Horta swore in Timor-Leste’s new ambassadors to Belgium and Laos at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace.
Maria de Lurdes Martins de Sousa Bessa was sworn in as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Belgium.
A distinguished diplomat, Bessa brings decades of experience in politics, diplomacy, and education. Her previous roles include Vice-Minister of Education and Culture (2017–2018), Member of Parliament (2012–2017), and Ambassador to Switzerland (2021–2024).
She has also served as Political Assistant to UNTAET, Personal Assistant to former President Xanana Gusmão, and Political Assistant at the U.S. Embassy in Timor-Leste.
Recognized for her contributions, she was awarded the Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste (2024) by President Ramos-Horta. An advocate for women and youth, she authored “Loron Ida” and worked with organizations like the Alola Foundation to advance social causes.
João Freitas de Câmara was sworn in as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
A distinguished diplomat, Câmara previously served as Ambassador to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, as well as Timor-Leste’s Permanent Representative to UNESCAP.
He held key positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Director-General for Asia-Pacific and Secretary-General. In 2024, he was appointed Chief of State Protocol, managing high-level visits, including those of the UN Secretary-General and Pope Francisco.
He continues to serve as Secretary-General, underscoring his dedication to diplomacy.
These appointments reaffirm Timor-Leste’s commitment to strengthening global partnerships. Both Ambassadors bring extensive experience and dedication to their new roles, ensuring the promotion of peace, cooperation, and mutual development.
“Timor-Leste’s diplomatic missions are vital in fostering strong international partnerships. I am confident that Ambassador Bessa and Ambassador Câmara will serve with excellence, further deepening our relations with Belgium and Laos, and upholding the values of our nation,” said President Horta.
The President expressed gratitude for the outgoing ambassadors’ service and extended his full support to the newly appointed envoys as they assume their responsibilities.
