Timor-Leste’s House Speaker to join Foreign Leaders at China’s V-Day Commemorations
BEIJING, 28 August 2025 (TATOLI) — At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, the President of Timor-Leste’s National Parliament, Maria Fernanda Lay, will join numerous world leaders on September 3 for China’s Victory Day commemorations in Beijing, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei announced Thursday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto are among 26 foreign leaders confirmed to attend. Several government officials, parliamentary speakers, deputy prime ministers, senior representatives, heads of international organizations, and former political leaders have also been invited to participate in the event.
President Xi is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on the morning of September 3 at Tiananmen Square in central Beijing.
China will hold a large-scale military parade that same day to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
In the evening, China will host a gala at the Great Hall of the People, which House Speaker Lay is also expected to attend.
Speaking at a press conference at the Media Center in Beijing, Hong Lei said the presence of many foreign leaders reflects China’s commitment to friendship and global peace.
He explained that the military parade is intended to demonstrate China’s strength, which he described as essential for maintaining global peace.
“China’s strength will contribute positive energy to global stability. We stand ready to work together with other countries for enduring peace and development,” he said.
More than one hundred foreign and domestic journalists attended the press conference.
