DILI, 05 September 2025 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste’s President Jose Ramos-Horta expressed his deepest appreciation to the People’s Republic of China for its long-standing and high-impact support for the health sector in Timor-Leste.

Upon learning of a report on the 10th Chinese Medical Team, the Head of State praised the two-decade partnership that has brought 123 health professionals to the country.

Since 2003, these teams have performed over 249,000 consultations and carried out more than 22,000 surgeries, demonstrating a spirit of dedication that has saved countless lives and strengthened the national health system.

The current team, composed of 12 members from Sichuan Province, has continued this notable legacy with exceptional skill at the National Hospital Guido Valadares (HNGV). In just a year and a half, they have treated thousands of cases and introduced, for the first time, several pioneering medical procedures in Timor-Leste. These advancements, including minimally invasive surgeries and innovative techniques in obstetrics and orthopedics, represent a significant leap in the quality of available healthcare and constitute a valuable transfer of knowledge to Timorese professionals.

President Horta also highlighted the team’s unwavering commitment to community health, beyond the hospital walls. The doctors have traveled throughout the country, from the island of Atauro to the cities of Laga and Liquiçá, offering free consultations to hundreds of families. Furthermore, initiatives such as the “Smile for Children with Cleft Lip” program and extensive training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid have empowered local communities and addressed critical health needs.

The people of China, through these dedicated medical teams, are not just treating patients but are helping Timor-Leste build a healthier and more resilient future. Their contributions are invaluable, and the Timorese State looks forward to continuing this vital and life-saving cooperation for many years to come.
