DILI, 15 September 2025 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste’s  Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão is in London for an official visit through September 21.

Gusmão’s agenda includes strategic meetings with legal advisors regarding the country’s land and sea borders.

The visit comes as Timor-Leste prepares to begin formal negotiations with Indonesia on maritime borders.

While in London, Prime Minister Gusmão will present the Order of Timor-Leste Medal on behalf of President José Ramos-Horta. The posthumous award will be given to Elihu Lauterpacht and also to Alan Vaughan Lowe. Both were senior advisors and international law experts.

Additionally, the medal will be awarded to Janet Legrand OBE KC, a partner at the law firm DLA Piper. This award recognizes her crucial role in negotiating Timor-Leste’s permanent maritime borders with Australia in 2018.

DLA Piper is known for handling complex international law cases, arbitration, and legal consulting for governments and multinational corporations.

The Prime Minister’s visit will also include meetings with the Timorese community living in the United Kingdom.
