DILI, 19 September 2025 (TATOLI) – President José Ramos-Horta has expressed support for the elimination of lifelong pensions in Timor-Leste following recent student protests in Dili.
The student demonstrations lasted two days and ended on the third day after mediation by the General Command of the National Police of Timor-Leste (PNTL).
“Students also demand the elimination of lifelong pensions. I agree. For a long time now. And it will have to be eliminated,” said Ramos-Horta.
Following the demonstration, parliament also confirmed it would not proceed with the purchase of new cars, a demand that was also raised during the protests.
The president praised the students for their conduct, noting that they cleaned the demonstration site after the protest ended.
“The students taught everyone a lesson. They behaved with great civility,” he said.
Ramos-Horta criticised commentators who, in his words, were the “geniuses who know everything, the usual ones who never see anything new in our country,” and who had rushed to make negative remarks.
He revealed that foreign infiltrators were present during the protests.
“There were infiltrated foreign elements (we have names, photos) who, from among the students, threw stones at the police to provoke a reaction and escalate the situation,” the president said.
He added that police acted prudently by identifying the perpetrators and promised to release their names, photos, and payment details at the appropriate time.
The president called for the demonstrations to be taken as a broader lesson for the country.
“Lesson for everyone: listen, listen, and listen. More attention and investment in the education sector, youth, and youth job creation. Fewer cars for politicians and government officials, less show-off,” he said.
