DILI, 21 September 2025 (TATOLI) – Australia has formally recognised the independent and sovereign State of Palestine, following a joint statement issued on Sunday, September 21, 2025, by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
The announcement marks a major shift in Australian foreign policy and aligns with similar moves by Canada and the United Kingdom.
In a joint effort, the three countries said the coordinated recognition was designed to build momentum for a two-state solution.
The initiative seeks to pave the way for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, attacks.
“A recognition of Palestine reflects the legitimate and long held aspirations of the people of Palestine to a state of their own,” the statement said.
The statement also read that the recognition reaffirms Australia’s longstanding commitment to a two-state solution as the only path to lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
The statement highlighted that “the international community has set out clear requirements for the Palestinian Authority.”
It noted that the President of the Palestinian Authority has restated recognition of Israel’s right to exist.
The authority has also made direct undertakings to Australia, including commitments to hold democratic elections and pursue reforms in finance, governance and education.
“The terrorist organisation Hamas must have no role in Palestine,” the statement stressed.
Further steps, including the establishment of diplomatic relations and opening of embassies, will be considered as the Palestinian Authority makes progress on its commitments to reform, according to the statement.
“Already, crucial work is underway across the international community to develop a credible peace plan that enables the reconstruction of Gaza, builds the capacity of the state of Palestine and guarantees the security of Israel,” read the statement. “The leadership of the countries of the Arab League and the United States is vital to this task.”
Australia pledged to continue working with global partners to build on the recognition and “bring the Middle East closer to the lasting peace and security that is the hope, and the right, of all humanity.”
