DILI, 24 September 2025 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament of Timor-Leste held a special session today to welcome Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is on an official visit to the country.
Parliament Speaker Maria Fernanda Lay described Malaysia as a “solid partner,” recalling its support in education through scholarships and in health by providing treatment for Timorese patients unable to receive care at the Guido Valadares National Hospital.
Several parliamentary benches highlighted the visit as a sign of stronger friendship and cooperation between the two countries, and as a clear demonstration of Malaysia’s support for Timor-Leste’s full membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
CNRT lawmaker Saul Salvador welcomed Anwar Ibrahim, stressing that the visit symbolizes friendship and fraternity. “The presence of the Prime Minister is a concrete demonstration of Malaysia’s diplomatic commitment to supporting Timor-Leste’s integration into ASEAN,” he said.
Salvador also recalled that Malaysia was the first country to open an embassy in Timor-Leste after its independence, paving the way for Timorese students to pursue higher education in Malaysian institutions.
She also underlined the importance of collaboration in entrepreneurship, particularly in supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises, with a focus on empowering women and youth as drivers of inclusive growth.
The session was attended by Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, Court of Appeal President Afonso Carmona, government members, and members of the diplomatic corps.
