President Ramos-Horta expresses condolences on the passing of former Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama

DILI, 24 October 2025 (TATOLI) – President and Nobel Peace Laureate, Jose Ramos-Horta has expressed his profound sadness at the passing of former Japanese Prime Minister, Tomiichi Murayama.

President Ramos-Horta has sent a formal message of condolence to His Imperial Majesty Emperor Naruhito, the Imperial Family, the Government, and the People of Japan.

In his message, President Ramos-Horta paid tribute to the late former Prime Minister, stating: “Former Prime Minister Murayama will be remembered not only for his remarkable sense of public service and his leadership during a challenging period in Japan’s history, but also for his legacy of moral courage and for the historic 1995 statement through which he expressed his deep remorse and sincere apology for the suffering caused during the Second World War. That gesture of humility and humanity remains a landmark of reconciliation and hope, resonating to this day across Asia and throughout the world.”

President Ramos-Horta concluded his message by expressing his hope that the spirit of Mr. Tomiichi Murayama may rest in peace, and that his commitment to truth, peace, and human dignity will continue to inspire future generations.
