DILI, 27 October 2025 (TATOLI) – The United States has congratulated Timor-Leste on its official accession as the 11th member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), describing the move as a “historic accession” and a significant step in the country’s regional journey.
In a statement issued following the country’s accession, the U.S Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, said the milestone “marks an important step in Timor-Leste’s ongoing pursuit of regional integration and cooperation.”

Since becoming an observer, Timor-Leste has taken meaningful steps to engage with ASEAN institutions and has demonstrated dedication to the organization’s vision for peace, stability, and prosperity in Southeast Asia.
The U.S. reaffirmed its support for ASEAN centrality and pledged to continue backing Timor-Leste’s integration efforts.
“We look forward to working closely with Timor-Leste as a full ASEAN member and congratulate Dili on this important accomplishment,” Rubio concluded.
Timor-Leste’s full admission into ASEAN marks a major diplomatic achievement for the young nation, which has long sought to deepen its ties with Southeast Asia since gaining independence in 2002.
