DILI, 29 October 2025 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, received a jubilant national welcome upon his return to Dili this morning from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, following Timor-Leste’s formal accession as the 11th member of ASEAN.
The official reception at Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport featured a military Guard of Honour and a traditional cultural ceremony led by Vice Prime Minister Mariano Assanami Sabino, who presented the President with a Tais, symbolizing national pride and unity in this historic achievement.
The spirit of celebration extended across the capital as thousands of citizens joined a community procession that accompanied the presidential motorcade from the airport to the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace. The outpouring of public joy reflected the deep significance of ASEAN membership for the Timorese people and the nation’s aspirations on the regional stage.
Speaking to the media, President Ramos-Horta hailed the mission as a resounding success and credited Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão’s leadership for guiding Timor-Leste to this milestone.
“All credit goes to Prime Minister Xanana, who, with incredible determination, led the country where we are today — a member of ASEAN,” President Ramos-Horta said in a statement.
He emphasized that ASEAN membership brings both opportunity and responsibility, adding, “We have to work hard so that ASEAN leaders will be proud of Timor-Leste’s development.”
The President also expressed gratitude to international partners and friends whose long-standing support made this achievement possible.
Today’s homecoming marks not only the conclusion of a successful diplomatic mission, but also the beginning of a new chapter in Timor-Leste’s journey — as an active and committed member in building a stronger, more unified Southeast Asia.
