Ramos-Horta presents 18th Edition of Sérgio Vieira de Mello Human Rights Award to six recipients

DILI, 10 december 2025 (TATOLI) – President and Nobel Peace Laureate Jose Ramos-Horta presented the 18th Edition of the Sérgio Vieira de Mello Human Rights Award to six distinguished recipients at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace.

The Sérgio Vieira de Mello Human Rights Award, established in 2008 by President Ramos-Horta, recognises the contribution of Timorese and foreign citizens, as well as governmental and non-governmental organisations, to the promotion, protection, and defence of human rights in Timor-Leste.

The award is presented annually on 10 December, marking International Human Rights Day and the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly.

The prize is awarded in two categories. The first category, Civil and Political Rights, honours individuals and organisations that have made remarkable contributions to the promotion and protection of civil and political rights. The second category, Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, recognises those who have significantly advanced economic, social, and cultural rights in the country. All recipients were selected after a rigorous evaluation process by the Council of Honours, which reviewed applications and conducted on-site verification visits to shortlisted candidates.

Under Presidential Decree No. 129/2025, the following individuals and organisations received awards in the 18th edition:

Category I: Civil and Political Rights

  1. Isabel Antónia da Costa Galhos
  2. Sister Leonie Manalu, FCJM
  3. Julião Cardoso

Category II: Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights

  1. Kooperativa Comsoi
  2. Grupo Monocura
  3. Assosiasaun Esperansa Feto Difisiénsia

“On the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it is our honor to recognize these courageous individuals and dedicated organizations,” President Ramos-Horta said. “Their unwavering commitment to justice, dignity, and equality is the bedrock of our nation’s democracy and a beacon of hope for our future. They embody the spirit of Sérgio Vieira de Mello, whose legacy continues to inspire our collective pursuit of a more just Timor-Leste.”

In accordance with Decree-Law No. 15/2009 of March 18, each recipient received a certificate and a cash prize of USD $10,000.
