DILI, 15 december 2025 — President José Ramos-Horta said he learned “with profound shock and deep sorrow” of the tragic attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, which claimed innocent lives and injured many others, describing it as an act of senseless violence that deeply shook Australian society.
In a press statement, the president extended condolences on behalf of the people of Timor-Leste to Australia’s leadership and citizens.
“On behalf of the People of Timor-Leste, I extend to Her Excellency the Governor-General The Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, the Government and the People of Australia, our most heartfelt condolences for the lives lost and solidarity with the bereaved families and with all those affected by this heinous act,” Ramos-Horta said.
Ramos-Horta reaffirmed Timor-Leste’s firm opposition to violence and hatred in all its forms. “Timor-Leste firmly condemns all forms of terrorism, extremism and hatred, including antisemitism, and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to peace, tolerance and mutual respect among peoples,” he said.
He stressed that the attack struck at core universal values, particularly as it occurred during a moment of religious observance. “Australia is one of the most tolerant, diverse and multicultural societies,” the president said, adding that “this attack which took place at a moment of religious observance, constitutes an affront to the universal values of life, human dignity, freedom of worship, and peaceful coexistence among communities.”
The president said Timor-Leste stands with Australia during this period of mourning. “In this moment of distress and grief, we share in the mourning of the Australian People and reiterate our confidence in the resilience of Australia’s democratic institutions and in the ability of its people to remain united in the face of adversity,” Ramos-Horta said.
He concluded by honoring the victims and offering comfort to their families. “May the memory of the victims be honored, and may their families find comfort, strength.”
