DILI, 27 january 2026 (TATOLI) – The Council of Ministers of Timor-Leste has approved a US$2 million donation to Mozambique in response to the severe flooding that has caused significant human losses, forced displacements, destruction of homes, damage to social infrastructure, and major disruptions to essential services.
The decision follows a formal request from the Mozambican government, highlighting the scale of the ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting hundreds of thousands of people, with women and children particularly vulnerable.
The suppor aims to contribute to urgent humanitarian relief, strengthen the capacity for rescue and assistance, and mitigate the immediate impacts of the emergency.
The aid will be coordinated with Mozambican authorities and international community efforts.
According to the country’s National Institute for Disaster Management, the recent flooding in Mozambique has affected at least 600,000 people, displaced hundreds of thousands, and destroyed or damaged more than 30,000 homes.
The floods have also severely impacted agriculture, submerging at least 180,000 hectares (440,000 acres) of crops and causing the loss of over 150,000 livestock, according to government officials.
Authorities warn that these figures are likely to rise as search and rescue operations continue. Some of the worst-affected cities include Maputo, Xai-Xai, and Chókwè.
