DILI, 04 february 2026 (TATOLI) – The Secretariat of State for Vocational Training and Employment (SEFOPE) and the New Zealand Embassy in Timor-Leste have announced the departure of 10 Timorese workers, the first cohort under the Recognized Seasonal Employer (RSE) program.
The workers are scheduled to leave for New Zealand on friday, february 6, 2026. They will work under contracts lasting seven to nine months, allowing them to earn income while gaining practical experience abroad.
State Secretary Rogério Araújo Mendonça expressed his gratitude to the New Zealand government for supporting the initiative.
“This marks an important step for Timor-Leste, offering hope to young people through government policies aimed at reducing unemployment in the country,” he said during a farewell ceremony held at City8 in Dili on wednesday.
Mendonça urged the workers to make the most of the opportunity responsibly, highlighting their role as ambassadors of Timor-Leste abroad.
New Zealand Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Helen Tunah, described the launch of the first cohort under the RSE program as a significant milestone for both countries.
She said that New Zealand government supports this labour mobility initiative to benefit participating nations.
Tunah added that the program will boost income for the people of Timor-Leste while helping workers develop the skills needed to support the country’s development.
One of the selected workers, Marcos da Costa Dias, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity.
“I will work responsibly and follow the rules, regulations, and work ethics in New Zealand to contribute to national development and support my family back home,” he said.
SEFOPE also announced plans to recruit up to 25,000 Timorese workers through the RSE program in the coming years, expanding opportunities for young professionals to gain international experience.
