DILI, 05 february 2026 (TATOLI) – During his high-level visit to the United Arab Emirates for the Human Fraternity Meeting, President of the Republic Jose Ramos-Horta held a meeting with former Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri in Abu Dhabi.

Reflecting the deep historical and personal bonds between the two nations, President Ramos-Horta extended a formal invitation for Ibu Megawati to visit Timor-Leste, potentially this coming August.

The President emphasized that as the leader of the PDI-P, Indonesia’s largest political party, Megawati remains a pivotal partner in maintaining the enduring reconciliation and brotherhood that has defined two countries’ relations since the restoration of independence.

In their discussions, the Head of State shared an optimistic update on Timor-Leste’s progress, highlighting the nation’s internal stability and the absence of political, ethnic, or religious violence.

The leaders reviewed the vital economic interdependence of the neighboring states, noting that nearly 60% of Timor-Leste’s imports originate from Indonesia and that thousands of Timorese students continue to thrive in Indonesian universities.

President Ramos-Horta underscored that the current peace and economic cooperation serve as a global testament to the success of the bilateral reconciliation process initiated by himself, Megawati, and Xanana Gusmão.

Beyond bilateral issues, the two leaders exchanged views on a challenging global landscape, specifically discussing the negative impacts of international trade tariffs and the humanitarian crises in Gaza, Sudan, and Afghanistan.

President Ramos-Horta contrasted these global conflicts with the “Timor-Leste model” of peace, describing Timor-Leste as “blessed” for its ability to resolve historical grievances through dialogue.
