DILI, 12 february 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, received a high-level delegation from CARE Australia at the Presidential Palace to discuss strategic development priorities for Timor-Leste’s remote and rural communities.
During the meeting, the Head of State shared his vision for accelerating progress in public health, education, and women’s economic empowerment. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the country’s most vulnerable populations, building on CARE’s three decades of service in Timor-Leste.
A key focus of the discussion was the urgent need to eradicate childhood malnutrition and stunting by strengthening school feeding programs. President Ramos-Horta underscored the critical link between high-protein nutrition and improved educational outcomes, drawing on observations from his recent visits to schools in rural areas.
The President and the CARE delegation agreed to develop a comprehensive action plan to mobilize additional resources to ensure that the “merenda eskolár” (school meal) program effectively reaches hard-to-access communities.
Reaffirming his determination to make a meaningful impact on national food security during his term, President Ramos-Horta welcomed the ongoing collaboration between CARE and the Ministries of Education, Health, and Agriculture. Supported by the Australian Government, the partnership aims to expand local food procurement from Timorese farmers to help nourish the next generation.
The Head of State expressed appreciation for CARE’s long-standing dedication to Timor-Leste’s development and reiterated their shared commitment to building a healthier and more resilient nation.
