DILI, 18 february 2026 (TATOLI) — Timor-Leste has condemned the Myanmar military junta’s decision to expel its chargé d’affaires, reaffirming solidarity with the Myanmar people and calling for the restoration of democracy and respect for human rights.
In a statement, the 9th Constitutional Government said it aligned with positions taken by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the United Nations, urging Myanmar’s military authorities to seek a peaceful and constructive solution to the country’s crisis.
“Timor-Leste, in line with the positions taken by ASEAN and the United Nations, reiterates the importance of supporting all efforts for the return of democratic order in Myanmar and expresses its solidarity with the Myanmar people while urging the military Junta to respect human rights and seek a peaceful and constructive solution to the crisis,” the statement said.
Myanmar has faced deep political turmoil since the military seized power in February 2021, overturning the results of democratic elections and triggering humanitarian, economic and political crises. The international community, including Timor-Leste, has repeatedly called for a peaceful resolution and respect for the fundamental rights of the Myanmar people.
Government spokesperson Agio Pereira said Timor-Leste remained committed to dialogue and democratic principles.
“The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste remains firm in its conviction that only through dialogue and respect for the will of the people can a peaceful and lasting solution to the crisis in Myanmar be achieved,” he said, reiterating the country’s “appeal to the international community to join forces to promote the restoration of democratic order and human rights in the region”.
