DILI, 19 february 2026 – President of the Republic Jose Ramos-Horta met on thursday with members of the Recruitment and Selection Commission, led by Avelino Coelho and Carmelita Moniz, to discuss the ongoing establishment of the Supreme Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal.
During the meeting at the Nicolau Lobato Presidential Palace, the Commission presented a detailed update on their first thirty days of work, confirming that all necessary administrative documents, internal regulations, and evaluation manuals have been finalized to move the recruitment process forward.
Avelino Coelho announced that the recruitment of the jury will officially begin next week, a critical step that will trigger the opening of the competition for senior judge positions.
“To ensure the highest judicial standards, candidates are required to have at least ten years of career experience, a background in the civilist system, and proficiency in the Portuguese language,” read a statement.
There are currently seven vacancies for the Supreme Court of Justice, in addition to several positions designated for the Court of Appeal.
The President shared his perspectives on the scheduling of these appointments, with the Commission aiming to install the Supreme Court later this year, potentially coinciding with significant national dates in august or september.
