DILI, 02 March 2026 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Bendito Freitas, has assured that Timorese citizens currently residing in the Middle East remain safe despite escalating tensions in the region.

Rising tensions after recent clashes between Iran, Israel, and the United States have made many countries worried that the conflict could spread further.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a credential presentation ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Dili, Freitas said the Government is maintaining close communication with Timorese nationals in the region. The ceremony marked the presentation of credentials by the new Ambassador of South Korea, Chang Hayeon, to President José Ramos-Horta.

“Our citizens in Abu Dhabi are in constant contact with us. There is some tension in the city, including at the airport and in hotels, but all of them are in safe conditions,” the minister said.

Freitas confirmed that the Government remains in regular contact with Timorese residents in the Middle East and with diplomatic missions to ensure monitoring and assistance if necessary. He urged the public to rely only on official information and avoid spreading unverified reports.

The minister added that President Ramos-Horta is expected to issue a statement soon outlining the country’s position on the conflict, while continuing to monitor the situation of citizens abroad.

According to local media reports, a military offensive launched on Saturday (28/02) by the United States and Israel against Iran has resulted in at least 201 deaths and 747 injuries.

The attack also reportedly led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who had been in power since 1989.

The escalation has triggered retaliatory strikes by Iran against Israeli targets and U.S. military bases in the region, heightening fears of a broader conflict that could spread to other parts of the Middle East.
