DILI, 20 March 2026 (TATOLI) — President Jose Ramos-Horta on Eid Al-Fitr 2026 extended warm greetings to the Muslim community, emphasizing national unity, mutual respect, and compassion while calling attention to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and beyond.
In his official message marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, Ramos-Horta conveyed solidarity with Muslim communities across the country.
“On behalf of the people of Timor-Leste, I extend my warmest wishes to you all on this joyous occasion of Eid Al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan,” he said.
He described Eid Al-Fitr as “a time of profound spiritual significance—a celebration of devotion, perseverance, and triumph after a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection.”
Highlighting Timor-Leste’s multicultural identity, the president underscored the importance of unity and respect among diverse communities. He noted that the recognition of Eid Al-Fitr as a national public holiday reflects the country’s commitment to inclusivity.
“The fact that Eid-Al-Fitr is a national public holiday here in Timor-Leste, is a powerful testament to our collective commitment to honouring the diverse cultural and religious traditions that enrich our nation,” Ramos-Horta said.
He added that shared celebrations strengthen social cohesion, stressing that “when one community celebrates, we all share in their joy, and this spirit of brotherhood is the cornerstone of our young democracy.”
At the same time, Ramos-Horta expressed concern for people affected by conflict abroad, particularly in the Middle East. He said that while Timor-Leste celebrates in peace, others are facing hardship.
“The ongoing conflict has claimed thousands of lives, caused mass displacement, and created the serious humanitarian crisis. It reminds us that the peace we so often take for granted is a precious and fragile gift,” he said.
Drawing on Timor-Leste’s own history, the president emphasized the value of peace and dialogue.
“Having walked the long road to peace ourselves, we know that dialogue and humanity must always prevail over violence,” he said, urging people to uphold “compassion, solidarity, and the obligation of the powerful to protect the vulnerable.”
Ramos-Horta also called on citizens to carry forward the lessons of Ramadan in their daily lives by practicing empathy, generosity, and support for those in need.
“Let us continue to practice the empathy and generosity that define this holy month. Let us look after our neighbors, support the poor and needy—remembering the importance of working together to build a future of peace and prosperity for all Timorese,” he said.
He concluded by encouraging prayers for those unable to celebrate Eid in peace and extended blessings to all.
“May the peace and blessings of this holy day be with you, your families, and our entire community, and may the Almighty guide the world back to the path of peace,” he said, ending with, “Minal Aidzin wal Faidzin, Eid Mubarak!”
