DILI, 22 April 2026 (TATOLI) – The Asian Development Bank has been one of Timor-Leste’s most reliable and effective development partners, with ADB Director General for Southeast Asia, Nianshan Zhang reaffirming the bank’s commitment to deepen cooperation with the government to support the country’s long-term development.
Speaking at the inauguration of the renovated Asian Development Bank Resident Mission in Dili, Nianshan Zhang said the upgraded facility reflects a renewed commitment to supporting Timor-Leste’s long-term development.
“It reflects our determination to strengthen partnerships, improve project performance, and expand the pipeline of opportunities that will benefit communities across the country,” Zhang said on Tuesday, in Dili.
Zhang expressed appreciation for the Timor-Leste government’s leadership and vision, noting that its focus on inclusive growth, resilience and human development continues to guide ADB’s engagement.
ADB has supported Timor-Leste since independence, financing projects in infrastructure, education, health and private sector development.
Zhang said the bank aims to further enhance its role by improving project performance and scaling up opportunities that contribute to sustainable growth and prosperity.
President José Ramos-Horta said the ADB has consistently stood alongside Timor-Leste over the past decades, providing support during both stable and challenging periods.
He described the institution as unique among development banks for its strong focus on public service rather than profit, particularly in supporting critical infrastructure essential to the country’s development.
“Notably, you were among the first, several years ago, to support Timor-Leste in building capacity for future membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). I believe you initiated this support ahead of many others,” Ramos-Horta stressed.
