UN Chief calls for more youth participation in local, national and global decisions
DÍLI, 03 August 2026 (TATOLI) – On the occasion of International Youth Day, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for young people to play a greater role in decision-making at the local, national and international levels, saying their participation is essential to addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.
In a message marking International Youth Day, observed annually on August 12, Guterres praised the creativity, dynamism and leadership of young people around the world while urging governments and institutions to invest in their future.
“This year’s theme — ‘Different Contexts, Common Aspirations’ — reflects a simple truth: That despite their many differences, young people across the globe share similar hopes for dignity, participation and opportunity,” Guterres said in a statement.
The theme also recognizes that many of the most significant challenges facing younger generations, including economic uncertainty, digital inclusion and climate change, extend beyond national borders and require coordinated global action.
Guterres noted that young people are already demonstrating leadership as organizers and innovators but stressed that they need greater access to the skills required for the future.
“Young people are already leading the way as organizers and innovators. But to go further, they need access to the skills that will shape the future — from critical thinking and problem-solving to digital literacy,” he said.
The UN chief emphasized that treating young people as equal partners would help countries harness the demographic dividend, accelerate sustainable development and draw on young people’s energy and expertise to tackle some of the defining crises of the present era.
“By working with young people as equal partners, we can unlock the demographic dividend, accelerate sustainable development and bring their energy and expertise to bear on some of the defining crises of our time. They must also be granted a greater role in decision-making processes at the local, national and international levels,” he said.
Guterres concluded by underscoring the shared aspirations of young people worldwide and reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting them.
“What unites the world’s young people is greater than what divides them. The United Nations stands with youth everywhere in their call for investment and inclusion. Together, let us build a present and future where every generation can thrive,” he said.
Observed annually on 12 August, International Youth Day raises awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing young people around the world and celebrates their role as essential partners in achieving sustainable development.
The observance provides a platform for governments, youth organizations, United Nations entities, civil society, academia, and other stakeholders to promote dialogue, strengthen partnerships, and showcase youth-led initiatives that contribute to more inclusive, peaceful, and sustainable societies.
