President Ramos-Horta champions Green and Blue Economies at Presidential Palace Seminar
DÍLI, 06 August 2026 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, officially opened the “Green Economy” seminar on Thursday morning at the Presidential Palace as part of the Dili International Marathon 2026’s DIM Expo and Green Week.
Addressing government ministers, international partners, and civil society, the President emphasized that transitioning to a green economy is not merely a response to international agendas, but an essential strategy to secure Timor-Leste’s economic sovereignty and sustainable development.
Highlighting the urgent need to move beyond a petroleum-dependent economic model, President Ramos-Horta urged the nation to rapidly diversify by harnessing both green and blue economies.
The President noted that Timor-Leste’s true future wealth lies above the ground—in its forests, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy potential, and vast marine resources—proving that environmental protection goes hand-in-hand with building a modern, competitive economy.
To turn this vision into concrete realities, the Head of State called for active state leadership, private sector innovation, and the absolute empowerment of Timorese youth.
Reaffirming his advocacy on global stages for fair energy transitions and green financing, the President concluded that by providing the younger generation with the right education and skills, Timor-Leste is fully equipped to successfully reconcile economic growth with environmental preservation.
