President Ramos-Horta celebrates 77th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China
DÍLI, 11 September 2026 (TATOLI) – President of the Republic, J. Ramos-Horta today attended the 77th National Day celebration of the People’s Republic of China, emphasizing the enduring and historic bonds between the two nations.
Speaking before Chinese Ambassador Wang Wenli and members of the diplomatic corps, the Head of State highlighted a relationship that spans from centuries-old maritime trade to modern diplomatic solidarity, proudly acknowledging China as one of the very first nations to establish diplomatic relations with a newly restored Timor-Leste in 2002.
Reaffirming Timor-Leste’s unwavering commitment to the One-China Policy, President Ramos-Horta praised the recent elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Reflecting on China’s steadfast support during the nation’s formative years, the President stated, “True friendship is measured by who stands beside you when the future is uncertain. Timor-Leste remembers this history with profound gratitude.”
The Head of the State further noted that recent milestones, including the recent visit of China’s Defense Minister and the formalization of the Timor-Leste – China Friendship Hospital, seamlessly connect the shared history of the two countries with present efforts to build a secure, modern state.
Looking to the future, the President expressed strong optimism for deepening economic and developmental cooperation through frameworks like the Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Development Initiative.
As Timor-Leste continues its integration into ASEAN and the WTO, the Head of State underscored the strategic importance of leveraging China’s zero-tariff treatment to expand Timorese exports and build a balanced, two-way economic relationship.
The celebration concluded with a shared vision for expanding market connectivity, digital development, and human capital, ensuring this productive partnership yields lasting, tangible benefits for both peoples.
