DÍLI, 27 October 2026 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste and Indonesia have discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in housing and social infrastructure, including the exchange of policy experience and expertise in residential development.

Vice Prime Minister, Minister, Coordinator for Social Affairs and Minister of Rural Development and Community Housing, Mariano Assanami Sabino, met Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Housing and Settlements, Fahri Hamzah, in Jakarta on October 26 to discuss housing policies and opportunities for cooperation.

During the meeting, Sabino highlighted the role of housing policies in reducing poverty, promoting social justice and meeting people’s basic needs.

He also called for an integrated approach to housing development that goes beyond providing homes to include access to sanitation and the creation of healthy, safe and adequate residential environments.

Hamzah outlined Indonesia’s experience in implementing housing policies, including its Three Million Houses Programme. He also discussed the importance of coordinating land availability, spatial planning, long-term financing and the provision of basic infrastructure to support residential development.

Both sides expressed interest in continuing the exchange of experiences and exploring practical ways to expand cooperation in the sector.

One proposal discussed was an international dialogue or seminar on housing policies and social development. The initiative could provide a platform for both countries to share their experiences and identify potential areas for collaboration.

The meeting reflects the two countries’ interest in exploring approaches to housing development that support social welfare and improve living conditions for their populations.
