CNE and STAE ready to organize 2023 General Elections

DILI, 16 december 2022 (TATOLI) – The Timor-Leste Electoral Commission (CNE) and the Technical Administrative Electoral Secretariat (STAE) are ready to organize the Timor-Leste 2023 General Elections. 

“We now have maximum preparation. We were looking forward to the official announcement of the timeline for the 2023 general elections by the President of the Republic, José Ramos Horra,” CNE President José Belo told reporters today after meeting with the Head of State, in Dili. 

During the meeting, CNE STAE presented their preparations for the upcoming elections, including civic education, voter registration, post-election assessment, staff recruitment, and meeting with political parties. 

Belo said the post-election assessment is crucial for electoral bodies (CNE and STAE) to improve their preparation for the upcoming elections to ensure a peaceful and stable election in the country.

“We will improve our work to ensure students and those who change their address won’t miss the opportunity to exercise their right to vote,” said Belo. 

The timeline for the 2023 General Elections would be presented by STAE in the near future. 

At the same place, the acting Director-General of STAE, Leonardo Amaral, said that in terms of technical preparation, STAE is ready to organize the upcoming elections, Saying strengthening collaboration with CNE is crucial for the elections. 

As of 8 november 2021, STAE registered more than 855.597 voters, including 6.538 Timorese voters who reside overseas. 

Amaral said the new data on the Timorese voters would be announced prior to the 2023 General Elections. 

“STAE would resume the voter registration that was suspended in November in January 2023 to ensure that young people turning 18 next year would participate in the parliamentary elections,” Amaral concluded.
