DILI, 30 April 2025 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic Jose Ramos Horta on Wednesday, met with Leung Chun-ying, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Chair of the GX Foundation, to discuss ongoing and future collaborations aimed at improving public health and education in Timor-Leste.
The meeting highlighted the strong partnership between Timor-Leste and the GX Foundation, a Hong Kong-based NGO specializing in medical and public health assistance in Belt and Road countries.
During the meeting, President Horta expressed appreciation for the foundation’s four nationwide projects in Timor-Leste, including dengue fever prevention, potable water supply through advanced nanotechnology, elimination of house flies, and medical education initiatives in partnership with the Catholic University.
“These projects have already shown promising results, such as a significant reduction in dengue cases and improved access to clean water, which also helps reduce plastic waste,” read a statement.
Leung emphasized the importance of community involvement in these health initiatives, urging the people of Timor-Leste to actively participate in mosquito and house fly control to prevent disease: “The foundation’s efforts reflect a shared vision of promoting good health and sustainable development under the Belt and Road Initiative, with plans to expand collaboration in the future.”
Both leaders expressed optimism about the continued success of these projects and the strengthening of ties between Timor-Leste and the GX Foundation. The partnership underscores a commitment to improving the quality of life for Timorese citizens through innovative health and education programs.
