DILI, 28 June 2025 (TATOLI) — Vice Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, and Minister of Tourism and Environment, Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, emphasized Timor-Leste’s role as a cultural and diplomatic bridge between the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), during the 4th Asian Portuguese Community Conference in Dili.
Minister Lay described the event as both a moment to reflect on shared history and a powerful reaffirmation of the unique identity that connects Timor-Leste, Asian communities, and the broader Portuguese-speaking world.
Minister Lay noted that the conference plays a vital role in inspiring younger generations to value and safeguard cultural heritage. “Today, we gather to celebrate diversity and reaffirm our collective commitment to cooperation, sustainable development, tourism, and culture,” he stated at the Dili Convention Center.
He noted that the conference seeks to honor a common historical legacy, cultural identity, and the Portuguese language—heritage passed down from centuries of colonial presence in Asia since the 16th century.
As a Portuguese-speaking nation and an active member of the CPLP, Kalbuadi Lay said that Timor-Leste takes pride in its role within the Luso-Asian community. He expressed his hope that the conference would provide a space for meaningful dialogue and idea-sharing aimed at building a common future.
“I also hope these ties will grow stronger and turn into real opportunities that improve the lives of future generations,” he concluded.
