DILI, 01 October 2019 (TATOLI) – The governments of Japan and Timor-Leste are continuing talks over the planned $US 44 million redevelopment of Dili’s Nicolau Lobato International Airport.
The Japanese Government said it would continue to discuss all the necessary issues with its Timor-Leste counterparts.
In a statement seen by TATOLI, the country’s aid agency, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), said it’s prepared to support the Timor in the rehabilitation of the airport.
“We are having a discussion regarding the issue; we find out the Government of Timor-Leste has organized the inter-ministerial commission that is internally discussing the issue,” the statement reads.
Beginning in 2018, the Japanese government has had some 20 meetings with the relevant ministry from Timor-Leste on improving (the country’s main airport terminal). The Japanese government has already formally approved the project.
The redevelopment of the international airport – including improvements to the passenger terminal, control tower and roadworks – is being funded by a JICA grant totalling $US 44 million. Several options are reportedly being considered to extend the runway to accommodate larger aircraft.
Work is expected to be completed by 2022.
