DÍLI, 23 november, 2020 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, sware in new Minister of Finance, Rui Gomes replacing his predecessor Fernando Hanjam, the former Minister, who was presented his resignation to the Head of Government on november 5th, 2020 due to the Health reason.
Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak placed great trust in Rui Gomes’s experience, as personality who has great merit, suitability and lot of experience and always show committment in the difficult public function with executive nature that he has performed, being, therefore consider the right person to lead the destiny of the Ministry of Finance until the end of his legislature.
“I take this opportunity to express my satisfaction and great joy, for being able to count on Mr Rui Gomes in my Government, wishing him the best of good health and success in the mandate that is now beginning,” Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak said.
At the same time, Prime Minister thanked the Former Minister of Finance, Fernando Hanjam, for responsibility and loyalty he showed towards the Prime Minister and the State, as Minister of Finance for the 8th Constitutional Government.
“I want to publicly express my thanks to Mr Fernando Hanjam, The Former Finance Minister, and wish him for a speedy recovery,” Taur Matan Ruak said.
Former Minister of Finance, Fernando Hanjam, was installed by the President of the Republic on June 24th, 2020, but unfortunately, for health reasons, he cannot continue to perform his duties. Therefore, on November 5th, 2020, he delivered his letter of resignation to the Head of Government.
The new Minister of Finance, Rui Gomes, before assuming this portfolio, was economic adviser to the current President of the Republic, Dr. Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, having also had the trust of the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, to lead the Commission for the Preparation of the Post-COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan. Also, he was Minister of Finance in the 7th Constitutional Government and Chief of Staff of the Presidency of the Republic, during the term of the President of the Republic, Taur Matan Ruak, current Prime Minister
The new member was sworn in at the Presidential Palace, at 4pm,
According to the appointment from the member of the government and the proposal forwarded from the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, the power is attribute to the President of Republic as the Head of the State to appoints, swearing and exonerates the members that affiliate with the Government.
Lú Olo appointed Rui Gomes to assume the role of Minister of Finance for the VIII Constitutional Government based on Presidential Decree, no. 68/2020.
