Mercy Corps to support IPG relieves the natural disasters risks

DILI, 14 december 2020 (TATOLI)— The Institution of Petrolleum and Geology (IPG) signed the agreement with the Mercy Corps to support the institution further study on the reduction of natural disaster.

The President of IPG, Gabriel Gaspar Aparício de Oliveira, highlighted that IPG as the institution that has been conducting the surveys in the geological resource sectors as well as natural resources sector since stablished.

Therefore he said, this agreement will focus on how they can conduct studies on natural disasters, such as landslides, tsunamis and other natural disasters.

“We will work together with Mercy Corps to share the results of the survey from the geological impact with our community to inform them about the risks from the disasters as well as the prevention,” The President of IPG, Gabriel Gaspar Aparício de Oliveira said at the signing ceremony.

The Coordinator for Urban Risk, Mercy Corps, Hermenegildo Cardoso Lenti, said the signing of the agreement from the two parties aimed at supporting each other, conducting studies in the areas usually the natural disasters occur.

“The study will be carried out by the IPG. Since this is an agreement and we need to carry out studies and the mapping, for us to be able to alert to the community when a natural disaster occurs,” Mr Lenti said.

He said Mercy Corps is free to provide the facilities to the institution such as, drone and scanning apparatus, to conduct a better study.

The Secretary for the Civil Protection, Joaquim Gusmão,said his presence shows the government support on the issue of the natural disaster risk.

“To deal with natural disasters, it is not just the Government responsibility, but all of us, and my mission, is to see the assistance given to the study conducted by IPG,” he said.
