EU-UN commit to support Timorese Government for ending gender-based violence in Timor-Leste

DILI, 18 february 2021 (TATOLI)– The European Union’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Andrew Jacobs, said the EU is committed to ending the gender-based violence in Timor-Leste. 

“We have the commitment to stop the violence crime against women and children, that has become a high number of conflicts in our society. This will be possible to ending the gender-based violence successfully through the involvement of civil societies,” The European Union’s Ambassador, Andrew Jacob said recently at the national forum of ending gender-based violence at the Cathedral Church Vila Verde Dili.

According to Mr Jacob CSO play important role on this process since the CSO also has the competence to reach the communities, families, Government and Constitution to induce the change and find the solution to this problem.

“The organization of civil society are mostly become the first author to identifying and respond to such problems. Since they are capable of reaching the communities, families, Government and Constitutions to induce the change and find the solution for this issue,” Jacob said.

he added that, this good opportunity for the Civil Society Organization to make a decision and collaborate with the other forces to prevent the sexual violence, protect the victims, stop the dispensation for those accusers and to secure the access for health and justice for the victims.

Otherwise The Coordinator of the United Nation Residents (UN), Roy Trivedy, acknowledge the violence against women and children as a huge virus disease that needs to eliminate from the society in Timor-Leste, and this is probable respond to the gender-based violence in the next five to ten years.

“We will realize that our opportunity to reach the Sustainable Development goal in 2030 will continue to improve. This forum has opened the space for the collaboration between OSS, UN and other Partners to cooperate with Timorese people to eliminate the violence against women and children,” he said.

Mr Trivedy added that, UN is committed to stop the violence against women and children also making sure every girl will live their lives clear from violence.
