President Ramos-Horta arrives in Vanuatu for his historic first state visit
VANUATU, 29 July 2026 (TATOLI) – The President of the Republic, Jose Ramos-Horta arrived in Port Vila on Tuesday, receiving a Guard of Honour to commence his historic first State Visit to the Republic of Vanuatu.
The official trip, which continues tonight with a Welcome Dinner hosted by Vanuatu’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, was initiated following a recent meeting in Papua New Guinea where Vanuatu’s Prime Minister officially invited the President to attend the nation’s upcoming 46th Independence Day celebrations.
This visit reaffirms a profound historical partnership, honoring Vanuatu’s unique place in history as the sole Pacific island state to advocate for Timor-Leste’s sovereignty at the United Nations. As a gesture of immense gratitude for this steadfast support during the Timorese liberation movement, President Ramos-Horta will bestow the Order of Timor-Leste upon Vanuatu’s leadership during the July 30 independence festivities to further consolidate diplomatic ties.
Beyond the celebrations, the President’s agenda includes high-level bilateral talks with Vanuatu’s President, Prime Minister, and Parliament Speaker to advance a newly approved Technical Cooperation Programme for Development.
Following a public university lecture and a traditional welcome at the Chiefs Nakamal, President Ramos-Horta will depart on July 31 for Melbourne to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the first Timorese refugees’ arrival in Australia.
