Timor-Leste approves candidature for the Human Right Council in the UN

DILI, April 14, 2021 (TATOLI) – The Council of Ministers approved Timor-Leste’s candidacy as a member of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN), for the period from 2024 to 2026.

The Government’s draft resolution was presented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MNEC), Adaljiza Magno.

The Human Rights Council is made up of 47 members, “elected by the majority of the UN General Assembly States for a three-year term, while the remaining countries maintain observer status,” The President for the Council of Minister, Fidélis Magalhães, said after the Council Minister meeting, at the Palacio do Governo Dili.

The minister also stressed that “the distribution of seats” is based on a fair geographical representation (13 from the Group of African Countries, 13 from the Group of Asian Countries, seven from the Group of Eastern European Countries, eight from the Group of Latin American Countries and the Caribbean, and seven from the Western European and Other Group of Countries).
