DILI,3 may 2021 (TATOLI) – The Government of Timor-Leste congratulates all the media professionals on the World Media day annually celebrated on May 3rd.
“The Eighth Constitutional Government is committed to promoting the development of the media sector and the quality standards of professionals,” said a statement from the Government released today.
According to World Press Freedom Index, Timor-Leste continues to be the nation with the best ranking in Southeast Asia, and this year the index put Timor-Leste at 71th out of 180 countries in the world ranking 2021.
As stated in the document, “Timor-Leste rose seven positions concerning 2020 and is classified as one of the nations with sensitivity to the profession of journalist among the 180 countries that were evaluated by the world association”.
The letter also reveals that the Government gives due importance to the private media have the necessary conditions to guarantee the transmission of information and awareness campaigns to society about the evolution of the pandemic and pay attention to health protection.
“The objective of sustainable development that defends freedom of information and protects fundamental rights is among the 16 SDGs adopted by Timor-Leste”, The document highlighted.
The Government has allocated funds to the covid-19 Fund to support journalists who are at the forefront in carrying out an awareness campaign for the prevention and mitigation of the new coronavirus in Timor-Leste.
