DILI, 10 may 2021 (TATOLI)- The National Parliament approved the vote of regards for the World Day of the Portuguese Language with the result of 48 votes in favor.

The President of the National Parliament, Aniceto Longuinhos Guterres Lopes, explained that the World Day of the Portuguese Language was celebrated on May 5, but the parliamentarians did not get the approval of the greeting vote on that day.

“Thus the vote of greeting for the World Day of the Portuguese Language is approved today by the National Parliament”, PPN Aniceto Guterres said.

The FRETILIN’s Deputy, Francisco Miranda Branco, stated that this language was very important for the country during its struggle for independence and continues to be today.

The Head of the Democratic Party (PD), António da Conceição ‘Kalohan’, added that the Portuguese language was the language of communication during the liberation struggle.

“We address the various documents in Portuguese, as part of the resistance process, so we should defend it,” he said.

Also, the deputy of the Fretilin, Antoninho Bianco, said that the Portuguese language is an international language, thus the 5th of May must be treated as a historic day for the Timorese State and other countries.

“The three revolution fronts of Timor-Leste – armed group, clandestine group, and diplomat group – consistently used Portuguese in the various documents to be sent abroad”, he concluded.
