Timor-Leste reports 253 cases of covid-19 and three fatalities

DILI, May 13, 2021 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste, Covid-19 crisis team on Thursday reported a record of 253 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the national total cases to 3,879 since the pandemic began in March last year.

The new infections included 203 in Dili, two cases were confirmed in Aileu municipality, seven in Covalima, one in Ainaro, one in Bobonaro, and 39 in Viqueque, thus The country currently has 1,818, the CIGC said in a statement.

Three more fatalities had been confirmed, raising the death toll to 8, it said, adding that 162 patients had recovered, taking the total number of recoveries to 2,060.

The Coordinator of the COVID-19 Crisis Center, Rui de Araújo said, of the three deaths two were recorded in Liquiçá and one in Dili. The cases in Liquiça were detected a few days ago and the patients refused to undergo treatment in Vera Cruz Isolation Center.

“The joint health team received information today that one patient died in Liquiçá and another one passed away in the middle of the way to the HNGV [National Hospital Guido Valadares],” said Araújo, in a statement.

Dili has been enduring the COVID-19 community transmission since April 25. In a bid to curb the virus spread, the country has closed down all schools, sports facilities and has also imposed lockdowns in some high-risk areas of infections.

The CIGC Coordinator reiterated that COVID-19 vaccines, along with other preventive measures, would save lives from the COVID-19.

Meanwhile, more than 27.650 out of the country’s 1,338,954 population have been vaccinated already As of Thursday (28/04/021) following the report from the Ministry of Health.

Timor-Leste launched an anti-COVID-19 inoculation drive on April-7 after having received vaccines from the World Health Organization’s COVAX Facility.

In the second phase of the AstraZeneca Vaccination, the country is targeting to inoculate at least 80% more population out of its 1,338,954 population.
