DILI, may 28, 2021 (TATOLI) – The National Parliament authorized the President of the Republic, Francisco Guterres Lú Olo, to declare the 14th state of emergency throughout the national territory, for another 30 days.
The renewal of the declaration of a state of emergency was approved with 35 votes in favor, zero against, and 21 abstentions.
“The law to authorize the renewal of the state of emergency was approved by the National Parliament. The parliament asked the Government to implement the appropriate rules and continue to raise awareness regarding the measures of the covid-29,” said the President of the National Parliament, Longuinhos Guterres, during the plenary session.
The Head of the Party of the Revolutionary Front of Independent Timor-Leste (FRETILIN) party, Francisco Miranda Branco, appealed to the Government to implement the rules properly.
“We appeal to the whole of society, to comply with the rules of the state of emergency, as the Government has already defined them, and their failure to do so can weaken the democratic rule of law,” he said.
Also, the representative of the National Congress of the Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT), Virgínia Ana Belo, said that the extension of the several states of emergency, from the beginning until now, has not revealed “efficiency and effectiveness” in the fight against the covid -19 in Timor-Leste.
The representative of the Popular Liberation Party (PLP), deputy Domingas dos Santos, continues to encourage the Government to face the prevention of covid-19 in the country.
