More than 300 Timorese people benefited from Chinese Government Scholarship Program

DILI, 14 june 2021 (TATOLI) – More than 300 Timorese young people have been benefited from the Chinese Government Scholarship Program.

The Chinese Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Xiao Jianguo informed that so far, more than 300 Timorese young people have been graduated from the Chinese universities under the Chinese Government Scholarship Program, saying it was part of the Chinese government’s commitment to assisting Timor-Leste’s human resource development and capacity building.

He said currently around 180 Timorese students was studying in China under the same scholarship, saying due to the Covid-19 situation, all of the students have been returned to Timor-Leste and doing their studies online.

Jianguo emphasized that the Chinese government was always committed to supporting the low-income countries in the education sectors, particularly the human resource development: “We welcome all students from low-income countries, including Timor-Leste to study in Chinese universities.” Jianguo told reporters, after the launch ceremony of the Chinese Sinovac Vaccination Campaign at the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e (UNTL), today.

Jianguo said the Chinese government every year offered up to 20 scholarships for Timorese students to study in China, adding the Chinese government promised to support Timor-Leste’s human resources development.

Recently, 16 Timorese students are qualified for the Chinese Government Scholarship Program 2021 intake and waiting to be departed to study in Chinese universities.

He added apart from the 300 scholarship beneficiaries, 110 outstanding college students from low-income families also have been benefited from the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship Program: “These significant achievements were made due to the joints efforts by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Culture (MESSK), UNTL and Chinese Government.

At the same place, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Culture (MESSK) Longuinhos dos Santos said that any scholarship like the Chinese Government Scholarship Program was crucial for the nation’s human resource development.

“As a new country, such scholarship is important for Timor-Leste’s human resource development. So, we are always willing to cooperate with any embassies and those countries that always committed to supporting Timor-Leste in the education sector,” Dos Santos said.
