SEYS-Peace Corps helps Timorese young people promote life skill

DILI, 07 july 2021 (TATOLI)– Secretary of State for Youth and Sport (SSYS), in coordinating with Peace Corps International Organization ( NGO) in Timor-Leste to support young people to participate in some training to increase life skills.

Peace Corps is a longstanding commitment to support Timorese young people and provides training in areas of English skill, entrepreneurship and business.

“Peace Corps is intending to continue its youth training program and cooperation with SEYS. The capacity program will continue after identifying some groups of young people in municipalities level,” The Secretary of State Youth and Sport, Abrão Saldanha told to Tatoli Agency, at SEYS office, in Lecidere, this wednesday.

He added that the corporation has been paused due on covid-19 situation. Today the Peace Corps made a visit to SEYS for ongoing support for the youth.

“Some American volunteers helped young people and, working closely with SEYS, provided youth capacity training.

Due on pandemic situation the training activities temporary suspended and most of the volunteers has return to United State of America,” He Said

Mr. Saldanha said nine of volunteers will come back to Timor-Leste to reactivate the training program, whilst the Australia and Thailand international Airport is still closed.

The Peace Corps will provide youth training to help people in English skill, economy and others.

The Country Director of the Peace Corps in Timor-Leste, Kavita Pullapilly confirmed that Peace Corps will bring volunteers in Timor-Leste to help young people in various training.

“We have sent some five volunteers to help young people through  training capacity in municipalities level and we are in commitment to continue this program in 2022,” Said Pulapilly

“ Peace corps has been established in Timor-Leste since 2002, after civil war continued it existed in 2006 and the capacity program was going until 2015, due to the pandemic the activity was temporarily paused and the ongoing youth capacity program to carry out in 2022,” He Said.

It is recalled that from 2002 until 2020, the Peace Corps has sent 300 volunteers to Timor-Leste to help young people increase their life skills.

The programs have been implemented in nine youth centers composed of Dili, Liquiça, Bobonaro, Ermera, Manufahi, Baucau, Manatuto, Aileu and Ainaro Municipalities.
