DILI, 15 july 2021 (TATOLI)—The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MEJD), today, has resumed the teaching and learning process of schools in the capital Dili and Baucau Municipality.

“It should be noted that the suspension of the teaching and learning process of schools in other municipalities had been resumed earlier, except capital Dili and Baucau municipality, but today we resume school activities in these two municipalities,” said Armindo Maia, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, at MEJD’s hall, in Villa Verde, Dili, today.

He said MEJD took the decision to resume the learning process of schools in Baucau and Dili, as covid-19 cases had declined, while the number of vaccination kept increasing in the two municipalities.

In Dili, 99 out of 197 schools had met the criteria of the Ministry of Health and MEJD to resume their teaching and learning process.

“Sixty percent of teachers of the schools in Dili and Baucau had been vaccinated, so they can resume their school activities,” said Maia.

“Other schools have not yet been permitted to resume their classes because 60 percent of their teachers and workers have not been vaccinated. If these schools reach this 60 percent, then MEJD will decide to resume their teaching and learning process,” said Minister Maia.

He called on teachers and students to keep practicing the health protocols to prevent and combat the spread of the virus at schools, by washing hands regularly and thoroughly, maintaining social and physical distancing, and wearing face masks all the time.

In order to keep an eye on the schools’ activities, a covid-19 team of  MEJD made up of national and local leaders will monitor and oversee schools’ activities to ensure that the schools comply with health regulations.

In Dili, 1,498 (47%) of the 3157 teachers have been fully vaccinated, while in Baucau 669 (58.7%) out of 1,140 teachers had also got vaccinated.

The total number of students in Dili is 54.743, while in Baucau there are 28.654 students.
