Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister tests positive for COVID-19

Dili, 01 september 2021 (TATOLI) – Timor-Leste’s Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak has tested positive for Covid-19, the country’s Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Fidelis Manuel Leite Magalhães has said.

The 64-year-old is “self-isolating at home”, the minister, Magalhães told reporters after the meeting of the Council of Ministers, at the Ministry of Finance, in Dili, today.

“PCR-based COVID-19 screening test on His Excellency the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak, conducted by the Epidemiological and Community Surveillance Team, with a positive result,” Magalhães said.

He said that Prime Minister is currently under the clinical supervision of health professionals to ensure Prime Minister will recover soon.

“We are grateful as Prime Minister is already had two jabs of the Covid-19 vaccine, and his condition is getting better and better now,” he said.

Regarding when exactly Ruak was tested positive for Covid-19, he said that: “I think the most important thing is that Prime Minister was tested positive for Covid-19, and he followed the process of the Covid-19 regulations.”

As of tuesday (31/08), there has been a total of 16.682 lab-confirmed cases of the virus in Timor-Leste, with 12.116 recoveries, active cases were 4.499 and 67 deaths, according to SIJK’s data.

In Timor-Leste, of the 754.864 eligible groups, 51.6 percent had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 26.1 percent have also received their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
