DILI, 30 september 2021(TATOLI)-The European Union (EU) has launched four films and three documentaries about the importance of trees to agroforestry, climate change mitigation, and how they contribute to the creation of new livelihoods for a sustainable future in Timor-Leste.
The première event was held at the residence of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of the Republic, Dr. Ramos Horta, in Metiaut, Dili.
The films convey an inspiring message of how local communities, with their wisdom, values and hard work are at the forefront of protecting and developing trees and forests in Timor-Leste.
The Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Timor-Leste, Andrew Jacobs, expressed his hope that “these films will entertain, inspire and open the eyes of the audience to the importance of trees and forests.
“They are a resource that locally can generate revenue, create jobs and new livelihoods. At the same time, they are also an asset that can be used globally for emission trading and climate change mitigation.” Ambassador Jacobs said in a statement release from the EU.
According to Ambassador, the further screening of the films will be held in form of roadshow screenings to provide entertainment and information to the population, traveling to locations in the four target municipalities of the Ai Ba Futuru project: Dili, Lautem, Ermera, and Manatuto.
The four films were writing by different film writers. “Film Entitled “Son of Manukoko, the Guardian of Trees” by Bernardino Soares, “Ai Ba Moris” by Tom Hill, “Three Trees, Three Stories” by Lena Lenzen and the ‘Making of’ “Three Stories, One Country, Beautiful Timor-Leste” by Jawad Rayyan,”
According to the statement, one of these films has already been selected for a Film Festival in Spain.
To reach the international audience, the films have been also sent to the environment and climate change-related Film Festivals, such as “Climate Crisis Film” to be held at the margins of COP 26, in Glasgow, Scotland, and to the “Jakarta Independent Film Festival”, in Indonesia.
