LEP-TL offers Free English Language Courses to street vendors

DILI, 01 october 2021 (TATOLI) – Learning Education Program Timor-Leste (LEP-TL) had been providing free English classes for street vendors to improve their English skills, which will help them in communicating and selling their products to foreigners.

Maria da Rosaria, the President of the LEP-TL said the program was established in 2020 to improve the English skills of the street vendors.

“After seeing many street vendors having difficulties in communicating with the tourists and foreigners, thus, we came up with the idea of setting up this free English Street Program for them to improve their English skills,” said Rosaria.

She said the program covers customer service strategy as well, as an additional lesson for the street vendors to learn on how to use positive words, tone, and body language in communicating with the customers.

”The free course has been halted recently due to mandatory lockdown in capital Dili, and will be resumed next week,” Rosaria said.

Some Indonesian street food vendors (Bakso) also used the opportunity to learn English with LEP-TL.

Currently, up to 27 street vendors are learning English with LEP-TL through Street English Program.
