DILI, 05 october 2021 (TATOLI)-FAO (Food Agriculture Organization) Director-General QU Dongyu said with some of the world’s worst food crises in recent years impacting tens of millions of people, there is an urgent need for specifically targeted funding for emergency livelihood assistance and to build resilience.

“Today we are facing an unprecedented food crisis on many fronts. Hunger and hunger-related deaths are a reality today,” said FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, senim yesterday at the UN High-Level event: Action to Support the Prevention and Ending of Hunger Now via online from Rome to New York.

Senim said as the world is approached the end of 2021, the situation continues to deteriorate. Million people are experiencing catastrophic food insecurity and many are on the brink of starvation. he refers to four countries (Ethiopia, Madagascar, South Sudan, and Yemen).

He added that the situation continued to deteriorate, with the amount of aid allocated and disbursed falling short of the $6.6 billion sought by humanitarian organizations to meet urgent needs. In addition, of the funds provided, too little is focused on emergency livelihood assistance resources – a key component of any effective strategy to prevent hunger.

Since UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced the creation of the High-Level Task Force on Hunger in March, FAO has assisted at least 5.5 million people in six countries designated as high priorities by the group to produce much-needed food in recent months.

FAO is also committed to building long-term resilience to protect, restore and improve livelihoods in the face of threats that impact agriculture, nutrition, and food security: “FAO provides evidence on the ground that emergency humanitarian assistance is highly effective,” he said.

He said the humanitarian community could not wait for a declaration of hunger before taking action, adding that to truly prevent hunger, humanitarian assistance was needed to transform the agri-food system and build resilience for the most vulnerable.

“We need to work together to transform our agri-food systems to make them more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable,” said the FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, denim.

Following the declaration from the Director-General of FAO, Qu Dongyu, senim regarding the requirement for the transformation of the food system and build resilience for the most vulnerable, Timor-Leste and the World Food Program in Timor-Leste (WFP-TL) had held a dialogue to discuss the national report on the Food System in Timor-Leste, Since 36% of the population in the TL were born consuming unprotected food, 47% of the children for five years.
