El-Matador organizes boxing tournament to grow boxing in TL

DILI, 21 october 2021 (2021) – El-Matador organized a three-day boxing tournament to promote and grow boxing in Timor-Leste.

The tournament took place between thursday (21/10) and saturday (23/10) at the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports (SEJD), in Dili.

Twenty boxers from 12 boxing clubs competed in the elimination round of the three different boxing classes – light flyweight (Not more than 49 kg) – flyweight (52 kg) – bantamweight (56 kg).

Of the 20 boxers, six were competed in light flyweight class, including Joaninha, Berguita does Carmo, Zelito Guterres, Rivaldo Ximenes, Leonel Lemos, and Nelson de Jesus. In addition, Nelio Algeria, Edigar da Silva, Natalino da Silva, and Elidio El Tigre were competed in the flyweight class, while 12 boxers competed in the bantamweight, namely Lucas Ximenes, Delio Goncalves, Jovernancio dos Santos, Napoleao Vieira, Jeferino J. Ricardo, Alexandrinho, Pelagio Xavier, Jose Alvaro, Dionisio da Cruz, and Jose da Silva.

During the elimination round, 10 boxers were eliminated, while the winners will compete in the semi-final, which will take place on friday (22/10).

Among the winners, those who are going to compete in the semi-final, including Bergita do Carmo, Rivaldo Ximenes, Leonel M. Lemos, Edigar da Silva, Elidio El Tigre, Lucas Ximenes, Napoleão Vieira, Alexandrinho, Jose Alvaro and Deonisio da Cruz.

The 2nd El-Matador Boxing Tournament was realized due to the financial and material support by several sponsors.

President of the Organising Committee for the Boxing Tournament, Juvinal Dias said of all the sponsors, Timor-GAP provided US$1000, Timor Telecom offered US$ 500 of mobile phone credit, Timor-Plaza supported the event by providing the banners, and Param Bobonaro Restaurant provided cooked food for the boxers.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Vice-President of the Timor-GAP, Jose da Conceicao said the tournament was a good initiative to mobilize and promote the Timorese talented boxers.

“It’s a good initiative to develop and grow Timor-Leste’s boxing. So, I congratulate the organizing committee for successfully realizing this boxing tournament,” said Conceição.

In addition, Dias said the El-matador Boxing Tournament takes place every year in october to commemorate the anniversary of the El-Matador boxing club.
