DILI, 18 november 2021 (TATOLI) – The Center for Arts and Cultural Studies (CECA) of the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e (UNTL) launched two new books entitled “The Role of Media to Prevent Martial Art Related Conflicts in Timor-Leste” and “AGAINST HEGEMONY: A study of Journalism Against Indonesia’s New Order, 1994-1998”.

“The Role of Media to Prevent Martial Art Related Conflicts in Timor-Leste” was written by Dulce Martins da Silva, a senior lecturer of the Social Communication Department of the National University of Timor-Lorosa’e (UNTL).

“AGAINST HEGEMONY: A study of Journalism Against Indonesia’s New Order, 1994-1998” was written by the current Chief Department of the Social Communication Department of UNTL, Marcelino Ximenes Magno.

The Rector of UNTL, João Martins praised both writers for demonstrating their work as academicians.

“I actually like the titles to these two books. You know media have the power to cause chaos, whereas it also can put an end to a conflict in a society. I congratulate both writers for writing these two books on journalism. I encourage these two writers to write and publish more books under their name in the future,” Martins told reporters at UNTL’s Conference Hall, in Dili, on Thursday.

He said UNTL would hold Book Exhibition in 2022: “Therefore, I encourage CECA to mobilize more lecturers to write more books to be launched in the next Dies Natalie’s of UNTL next year.”

At the same place, Dulce Martins da Silva said that the aim of writing her first book was to find the root causes of the conflict between the martial art groups in Timor-Leste.

“With this book, I can provide some solutions on how to solve and put end to the continuous martial arts conflict in the country. This book is originally coming from my Master’s Thesis, submitted to Waseda University in Japan,” said Silva.

“So, my research study was focused on the role of Comoro Community Radio in contributing to conflict prevention. I thanked CECA for all the support and motivation.”

In addition, Marcelino Ximenes Magno urged and challenged the young generations to familiarize themselves with reading.

“If you want to be a writer, you have to be a reader first. As a university lecturer, I want to encourage my students to learn and begin writing books,” said Magno.

He said Timor-Leste has limited libraries and books, adding, therefore; students need to be smart to read the information on the internet, social media and etc.

Magno said he is currently writing a book about the story of the former President of the National Parliament, Fernando Lasama.

Paulino Vicente, the Director of the Center for Arts and Cultural Studies (CECA) informed that the copies of the books would be distributed to the National Library of Australia, National Library of Indonesia, and the Library of Congress in US.
